Here’s my thinking and the gems I’ve picked up along the way that have helped me to stay on course, even when life is filled with distractions. Maybe this is just the pep-talk you need to build your confidence that ‘you can do it!’ Have a read:
Creativity is the ability to perceive solutions to problems or think about situations in an original way that move you forward to achieve a new and desired goal. Creativity can be used in ordinary ways (the routine, everyday stuff) or be applied to major challenges to reach future possibilities. The real essence of failure is not trying at all; it is a fear of failure as much as a fear of succeeding. With success comes change.
Falling into a rut is just being stuck in not trying something new; a rut is like a grave with ends extended. A definition of madness coined by Albert Einstein is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome. Creativity is therefore often in conflict with the attitude: ‘This is the way we’ve always done it!’ and confronted by the claim, ‘We’ve tried that before and it didn’t work!’
Innovation is the introduction of a new idea; this may take the form of a new goal, provide a different kind of service, or an improvement in organizational structure or process. In other words, innovation could either be doing something better or doing something new. Anything that will add value to what we are doing will bring with it the insight of why we want to do it.
Innovation is the process from a creative idea to the start of a new reality. Without creativity, innovation never finds traction to begin a movement. Creativity pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, but without taking innovative steps, all we have is a ‘talk fest’ and a few good ideas. When creativity and innovation converge and cooperate, then the outcome is often a successful synergy (a def. of success: when preparedness + opportunity meet up with one another).
Here then is my process:
- Focus (define the problem, define the opportunity)
- Be Creative (generate ideas & plans, prepare to ‘walk the talk’)
- Be Innovative (build team & ownership, strive towards realization)
- Implement (evaluate the process, evaluate the outcome)
